Children’s Book Week 2024 May 4 – May 10

Children’s Book Week has been running in the US since 1919! This event is so popular that the organisers now run another week in November. The theme for this year is No Rules. Just Read.

National Limerick Day May 12th

Everybody needs a bit of silliness in their lives and Edward Lear, the English writer is famous for his nonsensical prose and poetry. National Limerick Day is celebrated to mark his birthday on the 12th of May 1812. Edward made the Limerick popular with his A Book of Nonsense. This type of verse with its AABBA rhyme scheme is still popular and loved. Often the first, second and final lines end with the same rhyme, while the third and fourth shorter lines have their own rhyme. A lovely way to celebrate Limricks is to write your very own!

There was an Old Man with a beard,
Who said, ‘It is just as I feared!
Two Owls and a Hen,
Four Larks and a Wren,
Have all built their nests in my beard! Edward Lear
